Hello, and welcome to the Middle-Earth Encyclopedia, an encyclopedic reference to all of Tolkien's creations. The purpose of this site is to act as an informative library that educates readers about the works of J.R.R. Tolkien.
I am a life-long Tolkien fan. I am not associated with Tolkien in any other way. I am not affiliated with Tolkien Enterprises, Tolkien's estate, Houghton Mifflin, Harper Collins UK, New Line Cinema, or the New Line film trilogy in any way, shape, or form.
The descriptions and biographies in this encyclopedia are the rightful property of the Middle-Earth Encyclopedia. You may quote small passages, but please keep the amount you quote within reasonable limits. Also, please link your quote to the page in this encyclopedia from which you received it.
The information in the encyclopedia is all from Tolkien's writings. These include The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and the Unfinished Tales. All information is referenced at the bottom of each page.
Images are credited in the captions and often in a certain section at the bottom of the pages. Many of the images are from the New Line film trilogy of The Lord of the Rings directed by Peter Jackson. A good number come from the Decipher Card Trading Game while others are paintings by artists including Alan Lee, Ted Nasmith, John Howe, and J.R.R. Tolkien. They are the property of their source.
The papyrus header fonts and the family trees are the property of the Middle-Earth Encyclopedia. The maps are the original work of J.R.R Tolkien.
If you have any questions, comments, corrections, or advice, you may e-mail me at [email protected].
If you have additional information, please cite your references. For additional contact, please visit the encyclopedia's contact page.

References
At the bottom of most pages, you'll notice a section titled "references." This is the section where I credit my sources.
The sources are mostly from The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and The Silmarillion all by J.R.R. Tolkien.
The quotes and page numbers are from the American Hardcover editions published by Houghton Mifflin.
Some sources are in the Unfinished Tales.
Several online sources help me either format my articles or give me information. They include The Thain's Book and The Encyclopedia of Arda by Mark Fisher. I do not cut-and-paste any information onto this site.
Pages that are not referenced are articles created to provide standard information that may also apply to our own Earth as well as Tolkien's.

Progress
The encyclopedia is, and will probably always be, a work in progress. There are so many thousands of names in Tolkien's works, it's hard to write about them all. Also, each article takes time and effort to build.
This encyclopedia has not yet reached its highpoint, or the point in which it has covered enough information. It still needs some care and some love, which I give whenever I can. You can help too by contacting me.

Men or Humans are listed by culture, in order of the culture's population and importance. This is similar with Elves and Dwarves. Ents, Nazgul, and orcs are alphabetically listed under their own categories. Other beings are all other people of Middle-Earth and Numenor.
