Athelas in the New Line film
Plant which had the power to heal the wounded, especially those who were wounded by the Nazgul. Athelas could only fully work if it was crushed by the heir of Elendil. It originally grew in Numenor and was introduced to Middle-Earth by the Numenoreans after their homeland was destroyed. When Frodo was stabbed by the Witch-King of Angmar on Weathertop, Aragorn sought Athelas. He found some and tried to heal Frodo, but his wound was too great and it was required that he be brought to Rivendell by Glorfindel. Once there, Frodo had his wound partly healed, but not by the use of Athelas. In Moria, Sam and Frodo were wounded by Orcs and were in need of Athelas. Aragorn gave them the remainder of what he had saved from Weathertop. At Pelennor Fields in 3019, Ioreth used the Athelas to cure the wounded in the battle there. Faramir was among the wounded. Eowyn was also among them. He crushed her Athelas leaves and placed them in steaming water to cure her.
