Chieftains of the Dunedain
The Chieftains of the Dunedain were the rulers of the Dunedain after the Battle of Fornost, when the line of Kings of Arthedain failed and Aranarth, son of Arvedui the last king, crowned himself Chieftain of what was now a large tribe of rangers. 16 Chieftains ruled over the Dunedain from 1975 to 3019 of the Third Age. These Chieftains were direct descendants of Isildur, so they technically could have been King of Gondor and Arnor. The sons of the Chieftains were raised by the Elf Elrond in Rivendell. Aragorn, son of Arathorn, became High King of Gondor and Arnor on May 1st of 3019, and the Line of Chieftains ended.
