Shelob
Shelob in the New Line film
Giant Spider of Cirith Ungol. Shelob was the daughter of Ungoliant. She made her home in the Mountains of Shadow in Mordor in about 1000 of the Second Age. This area became known as Shelob's Lair. By the Third Age, she was the only one of her kind left. She did have children, though, who she sent to Mirkwood to haunt the forest there. She ate birds, bats, and orcs. She had much venom that she injected into her prey. She knew nothing of any matters of the War. Shelob may have known of Sauron, for he frequently sent her useless orcs to eat, such as Ufthak. Ufthak could have been save by his kinsman Shagrat, but he did not save him and instead fled in fear of being eaten. In 2980, Gollum entered her lair accidentally. She thought he was too skinny to be eaten and left him. He ran away quickly, but he did not forget her. In 3019, he brought Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee to her. He said they were nice fat hobbits for her to eat. He planned on retrieving the Ring of Power, which he cared much for, after they were dead. She stung Frodo after he had shown her the Phial of Galadriel, which frightened her. She was was fought off by Samwise Gamgee. She retreated to her lair after her prey escaped and was not heard of again.
