Sting
Sting glowing blue in the New Line film
Sword of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins that defended them from many foes. It was originally forged in Gondolin in the First Age. Bilbo found the sword in the Trollshaws in 2941 with Thorin and Company. It lit up with a blue color when there were orcs near by. Sting was first used in Mirkwood to kill a hoard of giant Spiders. Bilbo named it Sting after this event. He used it during the Battle of Five Armies. He did not ever wield it again. He hung it up at Bag End back in the Shire until 3001, when he departed for Rivendell. When Frodo came to Rivendell in October of 3018 hoping to destroy the Ring in Mordor, Bilbo gave him Sting and also his Mithril Mail. In Moria in 3019, Frodo killed orcs with Sting and also stabbed a Cave-Troll. He wielded Sting in front of Shelob in Cirith Ungol. She feared the blade, and Sam wounded her with it. He then thought Frodo was dead and took the Ring and Sting, thinking he would destroy the Ring by himself. But Frodo lived and was kidnapped by Orcs. Sam took Sting and killed many orcs with it, including the commander Gorbag. Frodo gave Sam Sting, and he kept it well. Though Frodo held Sting in Gondor, the sword then rightfully belonged to Sam.
