Amroth
Amroth was the King of Lothlorien in the early Third Age. He was the son of Amdir, who was slain in the War of the Last Alliance in 3434. Amroth became King of Lothlorien after his father's death.
Amroth was a Sindarin Elf, though the Elves of Lothlorien that he ruled were predominantly Silvan. Amroth loved a Silvan Elf called Nimrodel, but she would not marry him because she was of a different people, and she feared that if her people were exposed to the Sindar, they would be exposed to the evils of Middle-Earth that opposed them. She moved to live beside a river that was later named Nimrodel.
Amroth lived on a flet, which was a high altitude look-out post used by the Elves of Lothlorien. Amroth's flet was located on the hill that became known as Cerin Amroth. He was most likely the first King of Lothlorien to use flets, and the custom was passed down to his successors.
Circa 1100 of the Third Age, an evil presence came to inhabit Dol Guldur in Mirkwood, across the Anduin from Lothlorien. This evil presence became widely known as the Necromancer, though it was in fact Sauron. Galadriel and Celeborn of the Noldor came to live in Lothlorien to investigate, but they left after some time.
In 1981, the same year that the Dwarves abandoned Khazad-dum, Nimrodel fled from Lothlorien. She wished to find a land of peace and security. Amroth caught up to her in Fangorn Forest and he agreed to take her the the Undying Lands in the West if she would marry him. She agreed.
Amroth and Nimrodel travelled south to the Elf-haven of Edhellond on the Bay of Belfalas. Nimrodel, however, became lost in the White Mountains and Amroth told the Elves to wait so he could look for her. They waited until fall, when a great storm came from the Sea. Amroth was sleeping at the time, but when he awoke he was on board a ship. He realized what happened and jumped off the ship and tried to swim back to shore to find Nimrodel, but he drowned. The Gondorian city of Dol Amroth was named after him.
Galadriel and Celeborn became King and Queen of Lothlorien. According to the Elves of Lothlorien, Amroth's voice could be heard on the wind that blew up the Anduin from the Sea.
Notice: In The Unfinished Tales, "The History of Galadriel and Celeborn," page 234, Amroth is said to be the son of Galadriel and Celeborn, though it seems Tolkien abandoned this idea.

Names & Meanings
Amroth means "upward climber" in Sindarin. It can be derived from am or amba meaning "up" and rath meaning "climb." The word Amroth has influences from the Silvan language, and it is possible that Amroth was just a nickname given to the first Elven King who lived in a flet. If this was the case, Amroth's true name is not known.
