Atanatar II Alcarin
Sixteenth king of Gondor, Atanatar II was born in year 977 of the Third Age. He was the son of King Hyarmendacil I. Atanatar II's father had made settlements as far south as Harad, as far north as Mirkwood, as far east as the Sea of Rhun, and as far west as the Greyflood. Gondor was a kingdom that had become an empire. Atanatar II was crowned king after his father's death in year 1149.
Atanatar II was not adventurous. He did nothing to expand Gondor's land or subdue its enemies. He instead lived off of the glorious lifestyle left behind by his father. It was because of Atanatar II's selfish behavior that Gondor's empire began to fail. Since Atanatar II lived such a wonderful life, he was nicknamed Alcarin, or "the glorious."
Gandalf the Grey, an Istari wizard from Valinor, first visited Gondor sometime during Atanatar II's reign.
Atanatar II had two sons: Narmacil I and Calmacil. Atanatar II's grandson Minalcar, son of Calmacil, played an important role in the councils for his grandfather.
Atanatar II died 1226. Both of his sons became king before the title was finally passed down to Minalcar.
