Handir
Father of Brandir the Lame. The son of Haldir, Handir became the fifth and second to last Lord of the House of Haleth. Handir was born in year 441 of the First Age. He was the son of Haldir and Gloredel. Handir's father was Lord of the House of Haleth and his mother was a woman of the House of Hador. Handir married Beldis, woman of the House of Beor, and in 465 they had a son named Brandir. At that time, the people of the House of Haleth lived in the Forest of Brethil.
During his childhood, Brandir had an accident and became lame. Handir became Lord of the House of Haleth in 472 after his father Haldir and uncle Hundar were killed in the Battle of Unnumbered Tears. Though the House of Haleth still existed after the battle, it had resulted in a massive defeat for the Elves and Edain, so the population of the House of Haleth was greatly lessened.
In order to reside in the Forest of Brethil, the men of the House of Haleth had taken on the responsibility of guarding the Crossings of Teiglin on the southern borders of the forest. In 485, a band of Orcs crossed the Teiglin and Handir failed to hold them off. In 495, Orcs came again and this time Handir was killed. His son Brandir retreated with his people to a hidden fortress of Ephel Brandir deeper in the forest.
The attacks upon the Crossings of Teiglin were foreshadowing the more major attack Morgoth would eventually launch upon Nargothrond.
