Óin II

Uncle of Gimli, Dwarf of Thorin and Company. Oin was the son of Groin and the older brother of Gloin. Oin was born in the year 2774 of the Third Age. He was a skilled axeman and good at starting a fire.
Oin was chosen by Thorin Oakenshield to join his company of Dwarves on their quest to win back the Lonely Mountain and their riches from Smaug the great dragon. Oin II fought in and survived the Battle of Five Armies. He settled in the Lonely Mountain after the quest.
In 2989, Oin joined Balin's expedition to retake Moria. However, in 2994, Oin was traveling to the West-Gate of Moria where he was killed by the Watcher in the Water.

Óin is a Dwarf listed in the Prose Edda. The exact Old Norse meaning is unknown, but it meant something like "timid."
Since Oin was the second Dwarf of that name, he earned the style Oin II. Oin I was the first Dwarf by that name.
