Glóin
Peter Hambleton as Gloin in The Hobbit movie
Father of Gimli; Dwarf of Thorin and Company. Gloin was born in the year 2783 of the Third Age. He was the son of Groin. Gloin had an older brother named Oin II. Their family was of the line of Durin.
When the Battle of Azanulbizar ended in 2799, Gloin accompanied Thrain and Thorin Oakenshield in their wandering in the Blue Mountains. There, his son Gimli was born in 2879.
In 2941, Gloin set out with Thorin and Company to retake the Lonely Mountain and drive out the dragon Smaug. Eleven other Dwarves were chosen to accompany them on the quest, along with Gandalf the wizard and a Hobbit named Bilbo Baggins. When the Dwarves arrived at Bilbo's home of Bag End on April 26, 2941, Gloin thought Bilbo looked more like a grocer than a burglar. However, Gloin grew to appreciate Bilbo and the two became great friends.
In autumn of 2941, Gloin fought in the Battle of Five Armies. Thorin, Fili, and Kili were killed, but Gloin survived. He settled in the Lonely Mountain after the quest was completed.
Circa 3017, a messenger from Mordor arrived and asked the Dwarves if they knew the location of the One Ring. In 3018, Gimli and Gloin traveled to Rivendell to warn Bilbo and take counsel from Elrond. Gloin attended the Council of Elrond where he was able to warn the new Ring-bearer Frodo Baggins of the danger. Gloin's son Gimli was chosen as member of the Fellowship of the Ring.
