Biography
Gimli was a caring, kindly, and brave dwarf who was a member of the Fellowship and one of the first dwarves to befriend an Elf. Gimli was the son of Gloin, who had been a member of Thorin and Company. Bilbo Baggins was one of Gloin's companions in reclaiming the Lonely Mountain from Smaug. Gimli was born in 2879. He was of the royal line of Durin I.
In the early 3000s, the dwarves who lived in the Lonely Mountain were confronted by a messenger from Mordor who asked them about Bilbo Baggins and the One Ring. They did not tell what they knew and sent Gimli and Gloin to Rivendell to attend the Council of Elrond and tell Bilbo of those who hunted him.
They reached the Elven fortress in 3018. On October 25, they attended the Council of Elrond and Gimli decided to join Bilbo's cousin Frodo Baggins in his quest to destroy the One Ring. The other Fellowship members were Legolas, Aragorn, Gandalf, Sam, Merry, Pippin, and Boromir. They were nine to face the Nine Nazgul.
On December 25, 3018, the Fellowship set out from Rivendell with the One Ring. They headed south toward the Misty Mountains, and Gimli recognized many peaks including Caradhras, Silvertine, and Cloudyhead. He was excited that the Fellowship might find the Mirrormere of the Dimrill Dale.
Gimli told Gandalf that they might wish to travel through Moria, the passage under the mountains. Aragorn advised against it, but when the mountain of Caradhras was too snowy, Frodo decided that they must pass through the mines. Gimli still believed his cousin Balin to be living there.
On the way to the West Gate, the Fellowship were attacked by Wargs and Gimli became fearful of the regions that were his ancestral homes. He stayed close thereafter, fearing an attack.
At the West Gate of Moria on January 13 of 3019, the Fellowship was attacked by the Watcher in the Water. When Gandalf finally figured out the password to the mines, the Fellowship hurried in.
Gimli had thought that the password to the Doors of Durin was no longer known. But when Gandalf opened it, he was surprised to see that the wizard had outsmarted him.
In the mines, Gimli did not recognize any of the mysterious passages and streets. They were alone, and it was completely dark. Gimli was only aware that his cousin Balin had been mining for mithril.
As the days went by, the Fellowship reached a dwarven hall with splendid pillars and craftsmanship, proving Gimli to be of a very advanced race.
On January 15, the Fellowship entered the Chamber of Mazarbul. In it lay the tomb of Balin. Gimli was very disappointed to learn that his cousin was dead, and he began to weep. The Book of Mazarbul told that Balin and his company had dwelt in Moria only five years before being attacked by Orcs and other unimaginably horrible beings.
Pippin Took accidentally dropped a stone down an old well and awoke goblins and trolls, who, in due time, attacked the Fellowship in the chamber. Gimli snatched the Book to give to Dain II Ironfoot.
They escaped the attacking host narrowly and soon reached the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, where Gandalf was lost to the Balrog. Outside the mountain, Gimli quickly took Frodo down to see the Mirrormere. In it lay the glittering Crown of Durin.
On January 16, the Fellowship reached Lothlorien. Gimli asked if they would like to sleep near a tree, and they all voted yes. Haldir found the Fellowship and did not trust the dwarf. He made Gimli put on a blindfold, for Dwarves were not friendly with Elves. The whole Fellowship decided to put on the blindfolds, and Haldir apologized later to Gimli.
On January 17, the Fellowship was brought to the Kingdom of Lorien where they met Celeborn and Lady Galadriel. Gimli was fond of the beautiful Queen, for he had never known an Elf to be so fair and kind. He had heard from his own folk that she was an evil witch, and he soon realized this to be untrue.
Gimli loved the month he spent in Lorien. He wandered the wild woods with Legolas, and they grew to enjoy each other's company, much to everyone's surprise.
On February 16, the Fellowship left Lothlorien. Galadriel gave each member a mighty parting gift. But she did not know what a dwarf would ask of the Elves. He replied that he did not wish to be given anything because his gift was to have seen the loveliness of the lady. She asked what he wanted and he said he wanted a strand of her golden hair. She gave him three strands. Gimli's heart was broken when he departed from the city and the fair face of the Queen.
In the days that followed, Gimli and Legolas sailed in a boat together upstream with the others in other boats. The Fellowship reached Amon Hen on February 26. There, Gimli, Aragorn, and Legolas discussed where they were off to next. Gimli wished to accompany Frodo wherever he went. Aragorn suggested that he and Gimli could go with Frodo to Mordor with the One Ring while the others went to Minas Tirith. Boromir then announced that Frodo had run away with Sam and the Ring. Soon after, a skirmish occurred with attacking Uruk-Hai. It resulted in Boromir's death and the capturing of Pippin and Merry.
Gimli, Aragorn, and Legolas chased the Uruks across Rohan. On February 30, they met Eomer. Eomer was the Third Marshal of the Mark and the nephew of King Theoden. He first asked the three travelers what business they had in the Mark, and then asked if they were servants of the Sorceress Galadriel. Gimli took offense, and he and Legolas nearly killed Eomer before he apologized. Eomer then told the three that he had killed all of the Uruks during the night. He gave them horses named Arod and Hasufel and they rode to the Wold where they found the corpses of the Uruk-Hai. They realized that Pippin and Merry had escaped into Fangorn forest and followed their prints.
At the borders of the Forest, the three slept. Gimli had night watch and spotted an old man, hooded and cloaked. He suspected him to be Saruman and hollered, but then the old man disappeared. The horses ran off into the wilderness.
On March 1, Gimli saw another old man, this time deeper in the forest. Gimli sprung forward and wielded his axe, threatening to kill the wizard if he did not reveal where the Hobbits Merry and Pippin were. The wizard took off his hood and turned out to be Gandalf, this time wearing white. He assured the three that the Hobbits were in safe hands. He also gave them messages from Galadriel.
They soon realized that they must travel to Edoras. They made haste, especially since Gandalf was riding Shadowfax. They reached Meduseld on March 2.
When entering, Hama asked them for their weaponry, since it was not safe before the King. Aragorn and Gimli hesitated, but eventually were forced into giving it up temporarily.
King Theoden was under the power of Saruman but was released by Gandalf. Grima Wormtongue was banished from Edoras and fled to Isengard. Gimli rode with the Rohirrim and his former companions to Helm's Deep.
At this fortress, Gimli had a desire to kill Orcs. That night on March 3, the Battle for Helm's Deep broke out when ten thousand strong from Isengard attacked. In battle, Gimli slew many Orcs. While Gimli defended Eomer and chopped two Uruks, Legolas speared twenty attacking the fortress. Soon, the two friends kept a tally of how many foes they killed until the battle was won. Gimli killed forty-two Uruk-Hai, while Legolas only killed forty-one.
Gimli saw the Glittering Caves behind Helm's Deep after the battle on March 4. He told Legolas of their beauty, and Legolas promised to take him there after the War of the Ring.
Gimli, Aragorn, Legolas, and Gandalf journeyed to Isengard. They reached the fortress on March 5. There, they found Merry and Pippin. They were very happy, and also they were rejoiced to see that Treebeard had conquered Saruman's lands.
Gimli was at first cross with the Hobbits, for he and his companions had spent long hours searching for them. He forgave them when they gave him food and pipe-weed. After a nice long smoke, everyone entered Isengard to confront Saruman at Orthanc.
Aragorn looked into the palantir of Orthanc and revealed himself to Sauron. He saw the Corsairs of Umbar sailing up the Anduin, and decided to take the Paths of the Dead and summon the Dead to fulfill their oaths and defeat the Corsairs. Gimli and Legolas were to accompany him.
In the paths, Gimli was slightly frightened by the idea of the dead being summoned. He knew that the dead were following them, and he stayed close to Aragorn and Legolas. They reached the Stone of Erech on March 8. Aragorn summoned the army and on March 13 they marched to Pelargir.
In Pelargir, they conquered the armies of Umbar who rode on southern ships. Aragorn released the dead and the three companions rode upstream to Minas Tirith with the Grey Company. They reached the city on March 15.
Gimli fought long and hard with his friends. His axe killed many enemies including Orcs. The battle was eventually victorious and the western forces retreated to Minas Tirith.
Gimli wandered the halls and streets of the white city. He thought that, if Aragorn was crowned High King, he would trade with the city. On March 18, Gimli left the city with the Host of the West. They were off to challenge the forces of Mordor at the Black Gate.
They reached the Black Gate on March 25. The purpose of the west declaring war was not to win in battle but to give Frodo time to destroy the One Ring, which would result in the utter destruction of Sauron. Mordor sent forth the Mouth of Sauron and to Gandalf he gave Frodo's Mithril Mail, as though he had been caught.
Behind the gates, the enemy forces were massing. Orcs and Easterlings came forth and defended the enemy in the Battle of Morannon. They were unsuccessful, for Frodo destroyed the Ring and Sauron was defeated. Gimli was overjoyed by this.
On the Field of Cormallen on April 8, the Fellowship were reunited and Frodo and Sam were honored. On May 1, Aragorn was crowned High King and Gimli attended the event. On July 22, Aragorn and Arwen were married in the city. Later that day, Gimli and the Fellowship left Minas Tirith and set out for Helm's Deep.
At the fortress on August 19, Gimli and Legolas went into the Glittering Caves. Both were astonished by its beauty. At Isengard on August 22, Gimli and Legolas left their companions and set out for Fangorn.
When Gimli returned home to the Lonely Mountain, he brought a large group of dwarves to the Glittering Caves. He ruled his new cave for many years.
Gimli visited Gondor frequently and repaired the Great Gates, which had been destroyed during the War of the Ring. He made them out of mithril. Gimli went to Rohan to help repair and construct and visit friends like Eomer and Eowyn. He also visited Legolas in Ithilien.
In year 64 of the Fourth Age, Gimli gave Merry and Pippin information on the dwarves to add to The Thain's Book.
In year 120 of the Fourth Age, Gimli went to the Anduin with Legolas. There they boarded a ship with white sails and to the Great Sea they went. Across it to the Undying Lands they sailed, and the two great friends lived out their days there. Gimli hoped to see the beautiful face of Galadriel for the last time before his death.
