Ecthelion II
Twenty-fifth ruling-Steward of Gondor, Ecthelion II was born in the year 2886 of the Third Age. He was the son of Turgon.
Ecthelion II became Steward of Gondor after his father's death in 2953. Ecthelion II was a wise and bold Steward. He began constructing armies of hundreds of thousands as Gondor's list of allies wained.
Ecthelion encouraged other men of great power to come into his service. A man from the North named Thorongil did so.
During his time in Gondor, Thorongil advised Ecthelion II to attack the Corsair's stronghold in Umbar. Ecthelion did so and achieved victory. Also during his time in Gondor, Thorongil told Ecthelion not to trust Saruman, but informed him that Gandalf remained loyal.
Ecthelion's son Denethor II became increasingly jealous of Thorongil, and grew to resent him. This drove the future Steward to madness in his later years.
Ecthelion II died in 2984 and was succeeded as Steward by his son Denethor II.

Names & Meanings
Ecthelion is likely of Sindarin origin. It comes from the words ecthel meaning "spear" and -ion, a common masculine suffix. Ecthelion was the second Steward of that name.
