Biography
Aragorn II was a brave heroic Dunedain Ranger of the North who was the direct descendant of Isildur and the heir to the throne of Gondor. He was named High King of Gondor and Arnor after he successfully led the Western forces to victory during the War of the Ring.
Aragorn was born on March 1, 2931 of the Third Age. He was the only son of Gilraen and Arathorn II, Chieftain of the Dunedain. When Aragorn was only two years old, Arathorn was killed by Orcs. Aragorn and his mother, Gilraen, moved to Rivendell to live with Elrond.
Elrond cared for Aragorn. As Gilraen aged, Aragorn spent much time with Elrond and the Elves. They called him Estel. The word Estel means hope in Elvish, and Aragorn was the hope for men.
Aragorn only became aware of his true name and history in 2951. Elrond gave him the Ring of Barahir and the sword Narsil, which was reforged into the sword Anduril.
In 2952, Aragorn met Arwen, whom he immediately fell in love with. Arwen was Elrond's daughter, and she lived with her grandparents in Lothlorien, so was only visiting. Aragorn referred to Arwen as "as beautiful as Luthien Trinuviel."
But Elrond did not accept them as a couple. He said that Aragorn would have to be the High King of Gondor and Arnor to marry his daughter, who would have to give up her immortality to marry Aragorn.
Aragorn departed from Rivendell in the years that followed. He could not bare to see Arwen and know that he could never marry such a beautiful Elf.
Aragorn travelled through the mines of Moria entering through the Dimrill Gate. He travelled east to Rhun and then far south to Harad.
In 2956, Aragorn explored the lands near Mordor to hear word of Sauron and his evil schemes. He met Gandalf nearby and the two befriended one another.
Aragorn also became close with Thengel, King of Rohan. He rode with the Rohirrim to battle against the forces of Mordor.
He also became a close ally to the people of Gondor. The Steward of Minas Tirith, Ecthelion II, made him a captain of high rank. Aragorn told Ecthelion that his name was Thorongil. Ecthelion's son Denethor II long resented Aragorn for interfering with his relationship with his father.
Ecthelion treated Aragorn as a son or even a god. He followed all of the young captain's advice. If he had not, the downfall of Gondor may have come.
Aragorn advised Ecthelion to attack the Corsairs of Umbar who had long been threatening the Gondorians. Also, he ordered the Steward not to be allied with Saruman, who turned out to be evil. Aragorn left Gondor only a few years after his arrival.
It was in 2980 that Aragorn saw Arwen again. He had missed her, and she held the same feelings for him. They were reunited in Lothlorien. In the fields of Cerin Amroth, they danced in the elanors and agreed to be married one day.
Aragorn eventually returned to Rivendell and told Elrond his news. But Elrond did not approve, reminding Aragorn that his daughter would only marry the High King of Gondor and Arnor.
In 3006, Aragorn went to Eriador to visit his mother Gilraen, who had moved there to escaped the evil that was coming from the southeast. Nevertheless, she still felt she was overcome and would surely perish. Sure enough, Gilraen died in the spring of 3007.
Aragorn heard word from Gandalf that the One Ring of Sauron, which was in the hands of Frodo Baggins, might be found. Aragorn and his Rangers guarded the Shire especially, even well after Gandalf told him this.
Aragorn began the hunt for Gollum. Years it took, wandering through the Wilderland, but he needed to find him before Sauron did. Gollum had previously had the One Ring and might tell Sauron of its whereabouts. He searched the outskirts of Mordor until he found Gollum's tracks into the Dead Marshes.
On February 1 of 3018, Aragorn captured Gollum. On March 21, Aragorn gave Gollum to Thranduil of Mirkwood. In June, Gollum escaped into Moria.
Aragorn left Mirkwood in late April and was met by Gandalf in early May. Gandalf warned Aragorn that Frodo was departing from the Shire in September with the Ring and several companions. Aragorn went on a journey and when he returned Gildor told him the Nazgul were after Frodo and the Ring and Gandalf was nowhere to be found.
Aragorn went in search of Frodo Baggins and his companions. He found them travelling down the Great East Road from the Old Forest to Bree. He heard Frodo tell his friends that he was to be called Mr. Underhill at Bree. He followed them.
On September 30, Aragorn reached the Prancing Pony Inn. Barliman Butterbur told him he could not see the Hobbits.
At the bar in the restaurant, Frodo put the Ring on his finger and became invisible. Aragorn knew why, so he followed the Hobbits to their room. He warned them of the wicked men who were invading Bree and worse yet the Nazgul.
Aragorn then put forth the ruins of Narsil and begged Frodo to accept him as a guide. Frodo did so gladly.
The five companions left Bree on October 1. He led the Hobbits through lesser travelled routes including the Chetwood and the Midgewater Marshes. The Nazgul apparently followed them.
At Weathertop, The Witch-King stabbed Frodo's shoulder. Aragorn rushed to find Athelas, but Glorfindel took Frodo to Rivendell while Aragorn led the others.
In Rivendell, Aragorn was invited to the Council of Elrond on October 25, which decided what was to become of the One Ring. It was decided that Frodo must destroy it in Mordor with seven companions. They were Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Boromir, Gandalf, Sam Gamgee, Merry Brandybuck, and Pippin Took. Also, it was announced that Aragorn was the heir of Elendil and he intended to return to Minas Tirith in order to reclaim the throne.
The Fellowship set out from Rivendell on December 25, and Aragorn bid farewell to Arwen. They headed south for Caradhras.
On the mountain, the Fellowship realized it was impassable. They decided to travel through the mines of Moria.
They reached the West gate on January 13 of 3019. They were attacked by the Watcher in the Water, then hurried into the mines. They were followed by Gollum.
In the eastern mines, the Fellowship entered the Chamber of Mazarbul. There they were attacked by orcs, goblins, and a Troll. Aragorn defended Frodo and killed many of the evil orcs, but Frodo was wounded, so Aragorn carried him to the Bridge of Khazad-Dum.
Once there, all but Gandalf crossed the bridge. Gandalf fell into the endless dark pitt off the bridge in single combat with the Balrog. The Fellowship quickly escaped.
They entered the woods of Lothlorien on January 17 and they met Galadriel and Celeborn, grandparents of Arwen. The Fellowship stayed nearly a month and left on February 16. At their departure, Galadriel gave each member of the Fellowship a mighty gift. She gave Aragorn the Elessar gem from which he received the title King Elessar.
The Fellowship rode down the Anduin to Amon Hen, which they reached on February 26. There they were attacked by a group of Uruk-Hai under the service of Saruman. Frodo and Sam escaped to destroy the Ring in Mordor. Aragorn fought many of the orcs including their captain who killed Boromir.
Some Uruks captured Merry and Pippin and brought them across Rohan, almost to Isengard. They mistakenly thought that the hobbits had the Ring, which Saruman had sent them on a mission to find.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli held a funeral for Boromir and set him in a boat. He floated down the Anduin, soon to be found by his brother Faramir. The three remaining at Amon Hen chased the Uruk-Hai.
In Rohan, the three hunters met Eomer on February 30. He told them that he had burned all of the Uruks during the night. The three hunters feared that Merry and Pippin might have been dead. Eomer gave them the horses Hasufel and Arod.
The hunters explored the borders of Fangorn, where they found the Hobbits' tracks. They realized that they had entered the forest.
The three hunters followed the tracks. They were reunited with Gandalf, whom they had believed to be dead. Gandalf assured them that Merry and Pippin were in trusted hands. The four companions left Fangorn for Edoras on March 1. They reached Meduseld on March 2.
There they met King Theoden, whose mind had been corrupted by Saruman. Gandalf freed Theoden using his powers. Theoden tried to kill Grima, who was allied with Saruman, but Aragorn told him to spare the evil man.
On March 3, word reached Edoras that Saruman had already released his forces. There were ten thousand Uruks, all attacking Rohan. Gandalf advised Theoden to ride to Helm's Deep, the stronghold of Rohan.
When they reached the fortress, war broke out almost immediately. Uruks and Dunlendings flooded the Hornburg and outnumbered the Rohirrim dramatically. Rohan probably would not have achieved victory if it had not been for Aragorn.
He stood next to Eomer who wielded Guthwine. He looked for dawn to see if their was still hope. When he saw that the sky was pink rather than black, he asked the armies of Isengard and Dunland if they would like to surrender and make peace. They laughed and kept fighting in the Battle of Helm's Deep. The battle was eventually won by the Rohirrim.
Huorns helped Rohan challenge Isengard's forces by killing the orcs who fled into the forest. Erkenbrand and his army of the Westfold ultimately finished them off, though Aragorn rode out to meet Gandalf.
On March 5, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, and Gandalf arrived at Isengard, which had been taken by Ents. They found Merry and Pippin there. Pippin picked up the palantir of Orthanc that had been thrown by Grima. He looked into it and saw Minas Tirith under attack, and Gandalf rode him to the city.
Aragorn realized that it was time for him to reveal himself wielding Anduril to Sauron. He did not do this until later on, but he thought of it much, seeing as the Orthanc-Stone had direct contact to the Ithil-Stone of Sauron in Barad-dur.
Aragorn returned with Legolas, Gimli, and Merry to Helm's Deep. They rode with Theoden's forces to Dunharrow, where they were given the Red Arrow, meaning that Gondor requested aid in war. Eowyn was upset that Aragorn left, for she loved him.
Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli took the Paths of the Dead to summon the Dead to attack the Corsairs, who had sent a legion from Umbar to attack Pelargir. Aragorn was accompanied by the Grey Company, which consisted of Halbarad and some of his Rangers, Elladan and Elrohir, the twin sons of Elrond, and several other Elves.
The King of the Dead agreed to help Aragorn since he was Isildur's heir who promised to free the Dead from their curse. The Dead and the Grey company marched South to Pelargir where they found the Corsairs' ships.
They attacked the Corsairs and claimed their fleet of about fifty ships on March 13. Aragorn freed the Corsairs' slaves, who were primarily Gondorians but also people of Umbar and Harad. He also released the Dead who had finally fulfilled their oath. Aragorn rode in the ships upriver. He sent an army of southern Gondor led by Angbor to ambush Mordor's forces.
Aragorn reached the Pelennor Fields on March 15. He revealed the banner of the White Tree and Eomer was rejoiced to see that Aragorn had conquered the Corsairs. The two friends led their forces to defeat Mordor's in the Battle of Pelennor Fields.
Aragorn did not want to be crowned king until Sauron was fully defeated. He gave Prince Imrahil command of Gondor's forces for the time being while he visited Eowyn, Faramir, and Merry in the Houses of Healing.
On March 18, Aragorn gathered seven thousand strong from Gondor and Rohan to challenge Mordor at the Black Gate. The Host of the West was greatly outnumbered compared to the armies of Sauron, but Aragorn's plan was not to defeat Sauron in war but to give Frodo time to destroy the Ring, which prolonged Sauron's life. If the Ring was destroyed, Sauron's destruction would follow.
On March 25, the Host of the West reached the Black Gate. The Mouth of Sauron came forth and gave them Frodo's Mithril-Mail, creating the false impression that Frodo had failed. Aragorn still fought against Mordor's armies, for he still had hope.
Long they fought in the Battle of Morannon until Frodo finally destroyed the Ring and Mount Doom erupted. All of the orcs were immediately killed and the tower of Barad-dur fell. Gandalf and the Eagles rescued Frodo and Sam from the lava.
On the Field of Cormallen on April 8, Aragorn bowed to Frodo and Sam and let them sit on royal thrones of the city.
On May 1, Aragorn was crowned High King of Gondor and Arnor. The Crown of Gondor was brought forth by Frodo and given to Gandalf, who placed it upon Aragorn's head. Aragorn sung the song of Elendil for the people of Gondor.
At mid-year, Aragorn finally wed Arwen at the top of Minas Tirith next to the White Tree. Elrond gave him the Sceptre of Annuminas as a kingly gift.
Aragorn attended the funeral of Theoden where Merry brought forth the King's armor. Eomer was named King of Rohan. Eowyn married Faramir and the couple moved to Ithilien.
Aragorn parted with the members of the Fellowship on August 22 in Isengard where they visited Treebeard. As King, Aragorn granted the Ents the lands of Fangorn and Isengard to make green and beautiful again, and to guard the tower that still stood there.
He returned to Minas Tirith and began to pass new laws. The government of Gondor was changed. Faramir became the Steward, but was second in command of the realms. He was also the leader of the new version of the Council of Gondor and was also named Prince of Ithilien. Prince Imrahil was named second in command of the Council. Eowyn and Arwen both became great queens of the reunited kingdom.
The Woses who were native to Druadan Forest were given their forest and the rest of the areas around Dunharrow. No outsider could enter their region without their approval.
The Haradrim from the South immediately sent emissaries to the court of King Elessar to beg for peace, which they were granted as well as the lands of South Gondor. The Easterlings were also forgiven for serving Sauron and were granted the land of Mordor to make green and beautiful. Many of the Easterlings were thankful for Elessar, but others remained hostile to him and he rode east to make peace with them. While the Haradrim made swift allies with Elessar, he still rode south to keep the peace amongst their tribes.
In the north, Annuminas was rebuilt and made grand and beautiful again and Aragorn visited from time to time. While Dale was allowed to exist as an independent kingdom, the village of Bree was made part of the reunited kingdom and came under Elessar's command. The Tower Hills region was given to the Shire and all of the leaders there were made Counsellors of the North-Kingdom of Arnor.
In year 15 of the Fourth Age, Aragorn and Arwen visited Sam, Merry, and Pippin in the Shire. Sam was Mayor, Pippin was Thain, and Merry was Master of Buckland, and they were all Counsellors of the North.
Years Elessar ruled over the majority of Middle-Earth. He had a son Eldarion and several daughters. In 120, he died and was buried in a royal tomb of the city aside Merry and Pippin.
