Telchar
Crafts-master of Nogrod who forged Narsil. Telchar lived during the First Age. He was the best Dwarven-smith in both Nogrod and the neighboring Dwarf-kingdom of Belegost. Both of these Dwarf-realms were located in the Blue Mountains in Beleriand. Telchar learned much of his craft from his master Gamil Zirak.
Telchar forged Azaghal's dragon-helm sometime after the dragon Glaurung was first spotted circa 260 of the First Age. The helm depicted Glaurung on the crests and had a visor that protected the wearer's eyes from the flames of a dragon. This helm was given to the Elf Maedhros by Azaghal, and it passed from Maedhros to Fingon, then to Hador, and finally to Turin. In his lifetime, Turin eventually combatted and defeated Glaurung, though he destroyed himself afterwards. It is unknown whether or not Turin was wearing Telchar's dragon-helm at the time of his combat with Glaurung.
Telchar also constructed a knife which could slice through iron. He called it Angrist. Angrist was given to Curufin but was eventually taken by Beren. Angrist was used to cut one of the Silmarils from the Iron Crown of Morgoth.
Telchar later forged Narsil, which was later called the "Sword of Elendil," since Elendil used it to fight Sauron. Sauron broke it but Narsil was later remade by Elrond. The original owner of Narsil is not known, but the sword somehow survived the destruction of Beleriand and possibly Numenor.
Telchar probably died sometime in the late First Age. His date of demise is not known.

Names & Meanings
The meaning of the name Techlar is not known. Seldom did Dwarves share their real names with outsiders, so it may be that Techlar was a name given to this Dwarf by Elves. The early Quenya word talka meaning "smith" may be the root of the name Techlar.
