Mat Heathertoes
Man of Bree-land who fought against the Southerners during the War of the Ring. In 3019 of the Third Age, the Southerners invaded Bree. Mat Heathertoes was killed, along with his fellow Bree-folk Rowlie Appledore and Tom Pickthorn; and the Hobbits Willie Banks and an Underhill of Staddle.
After the battle, the Southerners were expelled from Bree along with the traitors Bill Ferny and Harry Goatleaf who had aided them.

Names & Meanings
The name Heathertoes is a reference to a plant, as were many names amongst the Bree-folk. Curiously, Tolkien mentions Heathertoes as a Hobbit name and Mat is said to be short for the Hobbit name Matta, though it was made clear that Mat Heathertoes was indeed a man and not a Hobbit.
